MADAME Newman

Room G-2

2023-2024 SYLLABUS

OBJECTIVE: Textbook D'accord 1, D'accord 2, D'accord 3, and Themes

In Level I, you will learn vocabulary, expressions and grammar to express yourself in basic French.  You will present projects in French to the class. You will use the three modes of communication (Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational) defined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. Students will be exposed to some of the richness and diversity of French culture around the world through authentic materials such as videos, French magazines and websites.  Level II is more refinement of Level I skills, more tenses, more grammar structures, and more speaking.  Level III includes advanced grammar skills, literary texts and history of France readings in French.  French Language and Culture AP follows the College Board AP curriculum and allows students to earn college credit with a score of 3 on the AP exam. Students are also strongly encouraged to test for the Volunteer State Seal of Biliteracy in French 4 or AP French. The students must maintain a B average in English Language Arts courses 9th -12th grades and score proficient in English and Reading on the ACT exam as well as score above a 5 on the STAMP test in the target language.

MATERIALS REQUIRED: 3 ring binder and tabs, notebook paper for taking notes, pencils or pens for writing notes, highlighters, and colored pencils.  Extras: scissors, mini stapler, tape, glue sticks.

Donations of school supplies are not required, but are appreciated. Suggested items include paper towels, tissues, board markers, writing utensils, and index cards.

GRADING STRUCTURE: In this class, we will have daily grades, which make up 40% of your average, as well as major grades, which also make up 40% of your average. Projects will be 20% of your total grade.  Major grades include tests and research reports. All tests will be announced.  Projects will be announced and will usually have a 1 week window to complete. I use OneNote and the textbook D'accord 1, 2, 3, and Themes to deliver curriculum materials.  Rubrics for projects, vocabulary lists.

BELLWORK: is the assignment –Begin working on the bellwork Duolingo as soon as you get to class.  I will take your bellwork grade weekly.  (Duolingo 200 points per week) It is essential that you make up your bellwork if you are absent, because sometimes the bellwork assignments also contain notes over new material.

HOMEWORK: No homework, but students are welcome to do some French games, look at French websites, listen to French music or watch French movies every day! You are expected to earn 200 points on Duolingo every  weeks, this is normally bellwork, but you may need to  complete this on your own time.

TESTS: There is one test per chapter with listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, speaking and culture questions. We often do projects instead of tests.  Many times we complete tests using online testing. Just be prepared.

HALL PRIVILEGES: You may use the restroom four times per nine weeks with your restroom passes.  I will give them out at the beginning of each nine weeks. Avoiding leaving class will earn you a dropped grade for the grading period.  If you use the restroom, please be back in a reasonable amount of time.  If you are gone for more than that, I will put a note in skyward regarding skipping class and notify administration.  One person at a time may leave with the hall pass, and no one will be allowed to leave the first fifteen or last fifteen minutes of class.  Please take care of your personal business during class changes. No one will be permitted to leave class to go to the vending machines.

EXTRA CREDIT: I do not give extra credit as this is above and beyond regular class work. Students must complete all assigned work before asking about extra credit, I take reports from Kahoot and Quizizz which allow me to see student progress and assess student effort during review sessions.

TARDY POLICY: Please be on time. Be in your seat when the tardy bell rings. Coming in the door as the bell is ringing will be marked as a tardy.  If you are late because a teacher or another adult kept you late, bring a pass or be prepared to go back for one.

Late work policy for homework and projects: See the rubric for time management section. As per BOE, 3 tardies = one unexcused absence. Final exam exemptions are based upon attendance and grade scores. A 5 absences, B up to but not more than 3 absences, C 1 absence. D automatically takes final exams.

DRESS CODE: Please adhere to the dress code. I will enforce the Bedford BOE dress code as far as clothing displaying alcohol, tobacco, profanity, weapons or vulgarity, as well as for too-short shorts/skirts or too-tiny spaghetti strap shirts, hats and bandanas are not allowed, holes in jeans above fingertip length need to have something under them, and finally belly shirts are definitely not allowed.  My classroom is cold, so keep that in mind as you dress for the school day.

CELL PHONES: Please place your cell phone in the rack provided on top of the computer cart and go to the computer. Having your cell phone out during instructional time will be logged in skyward and an office referral will be made. School board policy states that cell phones are not to be used during instructional time.
