About Me

Hello! I am Dona Northcutt, and I am one of two librarians at Shelbyville Central High School. My husband, daughter, and myself are all graduates of SCHS. I am part of a family that includes several generations of teachers; therefore, it is not surprising that my daughter is now teaching eighth grade history at Harris Middle.

I enjoy a variety of activities: reading short stories, watching movies, gardening, and visiting various points of interests in the Middle Tennessee area.

My favorite short stories are written by Edgar Allan Poe, Flannery O'Connor, and William Faulkner. My all-time favorite short story is "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Poe.  You almost can't beat O'Connor's "Good Country People," and if you like a taste of American Gothic, "A Rose for Emily" by Faulkner is a great choice.

I enjoy all types of movies, but one of my favorites is Desk Set with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Of course, Hepburn plays a dynamic research librarian. Another movie that I always enjoy watching is A League of Their Own, a fictional account of the actual All-American Girls Professional Baseball League that was formed during World War II. The league was created to provide a sporting event while the men were away fighting the war.

In terms of gardening, I absolutely love it and can't wait for spring and summer to arrive. I have to admit that I am still quite the novice, and I have a great deal to learn.

I also love to visit the local sites around Tennessee. One of my favorite historical places is the Carter House in Franklin, Tennessee. The Civil War reenactment they produce each year in honor of the battle is quite impressive. I have recently discovered a wonderful walking trail at Old Stone Fort Park in Manchester, TN. It is shady, wooded, and a great place to get in some light exercise. I highly recommend it.

I am an avid animal lover, and I absolutely love rescue animals. We currently have the wonderful company of two rescue dogs and one rescue cat. There is never a dull moment at our home. They are all truly a beloved part of our family. The smaller of the two dogs, Molly, is a rescue dog from a local animal group, New Destiny Dog Rescue. This extremely active group does wonderful things for our animal community.

Career

I am currently in my 35th year of teaching. I started my career in education when I was hired to teach seventh grade English at Harris Middle School in 1989. After teaching English at Harris for several years, I decided to take the opportunity to serve as the school librarian. I was employed at Harris Middle for twenty-two years. In 2011, I accepted the position at Shelbyville Central High School to be the librarian. I am proud to be a part of the SCHS library and the efforts it is making to utilize the latest technology, books, and materials to better serve our students in their pursuit of knowledge.
