Biography

Kayne Gilliland is enjoying his first year as Assistant Principal and seventeenth year as an educator at Shelbyville Central High School. 

            A native of Murfreesboro, Kayne received his Bachelor’s degree at MTSU in music education in 2004 and his Master’s degree at MTSU with an emphasis in conducting in 2007. He is currently working on his Educational Specialist Degree in Instructional Leadership at the University of Tennessee. Before being honored as the Assistant Principal, Mr. Gilliland was the Director of Bands for SCHS. His responsibilities included running the everyday operations of the music programs. These responsibilities included running the award-winning Shelbyville High School Marching Band, conducting the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, and the Concert Chorale. He also taught Guitar Class. Prior to SCHS, he worked at Blackman High School as an assistant band director where he conducted the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Bands, and Percussion Ensemble.  

            While doing his undergraduate work at MTSU, Mr. Gilliland received the Earl T. Hinton Music Education Award and was twice chosen to receive the Joseph T. Smith Music Education Award.  Mr. Gilliland is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lamda Music Honor’s Society, Middle Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, National Association for Music Education, Tennessee Educators Association, and Bedford County Educators Association. He enjoys spending time with his wife Meredith and his daughters Adeline, Elizabeth, and Evelyn.
